In the last post I talked about Zach liking his new shoes because they looked like “Steve shoes”. I wanted to elaborate a bit and also share a very adult conversation I had with Zach the other day.
Flashing back to Monday when both the boys and I stayed home because they were both sick (they had strep-throat by the way) Casey J asked to watch his Wiggly Safari video which also has The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, his wife, and daughter in it. It is one of his favorite videos to watch. Okay now remember this point (which seems pointless right now).
Few days ago Zach was singing his “continent song” and a line in it is “don’t forget Australia”. Then he piped up, “Mom, lets go to Australia to see Steve and his Zoo”. He refers to him as just Steve. I then asked Zach how he knew who Steve was. He explained to me in a rather adult like manner that he saw him in Casey J’s Wiggles movie, and that he sees him on that channel the “Animal World” (Animal Planet) with his wife talking about animals. My reply was a bit of awe, and then to say maybe someday we could go to his zoo. I didn’t really go any further than that. I know one day I’ll end up explaining what happened to him, but that didn’t seem to be the right time. I mentioned to conversation to Casey that night and then sorta forgot about it.
Then when he saw the shoes I chose for him on Saturday, he proudly said, “Mom those look like Steve shoes!” I have realized that Zach has made a connection with a man he doesn’t know and will never meet. I hope one day we do get to visit Australia Zoo and that I can tell Zach what a great guy Steve was and how many people’s lives were touched by him. Until then Zach will brag to all his friends tomorrow at school about his new cool “Steve Shoes”.
