Teach your girl to fish…

and she’ll eventually get pretty darn good at it. I spent last weekend in Port O’Connor fishing with just my dad. I had a blast. As soon as I got in Friday evening we went out to drift the Jetties and we had some bites, I had what I figured was a good size redfish but I could only see it’s topside and when I got it close to the boat it came off the hook and swam away. We tried for a bit longer before it became a lot of work then headed back to the camper. Visited dad’s college buddy who owns a lodge down there and then had some fried shrimp from Kathy’s. Dad said we’ll go when we wake up in the morning, no need to set an alarm.

Little did I know he easily wakes up by 5:30am in the morning and I pull on some fishing clothes and off we go. It was still technically dark but his nifty GPS guided us out the canal to some wells in the bay where we then proceeded to catch decent trout for the next hour and a half. One right after the other with some decent size black tip sharks mixed in. We lost a lot of hooks and liters that morning. At about 6:45am we could see a rain storm coming so dad got out his Frogg Toggs and then it rained, boy did it rain. We stayed pretty dry in the suits and even caught a few fish as the storm blew over. [inspic=763,,fullscreen,thumb]We had our limit of trout just before 8:30am when we headed back to the camper and made a quick breakfast.

After a quick attempt at fishing in more rain, dad decided he needed a good ol’ nap. That evening about 6pm we headed back to the same wells and at one of them we started catching some really nice size trout, or as dad put it “tournament trout”. Or as I put it, time to get the camera out for bragging rights.

We worked a little harder for the fish on Sunday but it was still fun. Casey still had all his hair when I got home Sunday afternoon so that was a good sign. Can’t wait for the next father daughter fishing trip!
