Yeah, he’s tall

The boys have soccer practice on Thursdays with games on Saturdays from now until the first weekend in May. This week was Z Man’s first beakypractice becuase he was sick last week. When we walked up to the field two separate parents asked if the boys were both mine then both asked, “how old is he?” Pointing to Z Man. “He’s six, just turned six in September.” “Wow, really” “Yeah, his brother’s only a year younger.” “He’s pretty tall.” Then I get this one. “Is your husband tall?” You know because I’m so short and all. “No, not really, but my dad’s tall and their uncles are tall…” I think I am going to start carrying around his birth certificate as proof. If you watch him for just a second though he certainly has the coordination of a six year old. A little goofy, smart and knows what’s going on, but a little like this guy over there (remember this cartoon?) ->

The boys partnered up and worked together pretty well, during scrimmage they only wanted to pass to each other and we talked about the rest of the team being involved too. I am so excited to watch Casey J actually play in the game. He just has a new sense of confidence. He was even telling his brother how not to kick the  ball. After practice we were talking about how fast Casey J was and we gave him the nickname of  “El Tornado” because he’s so fast and the Z Man decided his was “Hulkman” becuase he was strong. It’ll be fun to see how they work and grow together this year. I hope.

How old is he? Really? Wow, he's tall!

Good Habits

Big C and I never really had to talk about our education choices for the boys. We both sort of somehow agreed on what we wanted without having to discuss it because we were both on the very same page. We knew we wanted them to go to private school. I’m not necessarily snubbing public school, we just didn’t see it as a fit for our family. We found a wonderful Montessori based school close to work where the boys have been attending since they were just shy of 4 years old. Z Man will be 7 this year (holy cow) and will have completed the 1st grade at his school which is as high as it goes, Casey J will stay for next school year to complete his 1st grade there. We are in the somewhat stressful process of finding Z Man’s next school. In the mean time they both bring home homework folders each Monday and they are due each Friday.

Working the pencil

We’ve made a routine of working a little harder Monday – Wednesday night so they can have it all done on Wednesday night and then have four days not to worry about homework. We review for any tests on Thursday if we need to. Homework is pretty much my gig, so we’ve formed some certain routines. While it was very stressful at first with Casey J he now cannot wait to get home and do his homework for the day, he has that confidence now.

Not Mad, Just Concentrating

And the Zach Attack, well homework seems to be pretty darn easy for him if he’s not distracted. I barely have to check his math work. I caught them in the process of doing their work last week,  I’m pretty sure they are forming good study habits even now at this young age and I hope they stick…

Unusually Warm

Last Wednesday the weather was a bit warmer than it should be in WINTER. That’s right Texas, it’s still supposed to be weather. Not spring, bordering on summer. I think there is something about Texas that makes Mother Nature forget her times or seasons. When I picked the boys up from school that afternoon I thought I’d suprise them and take them to the wood park (their most favorite park to play at). I don’t recall if I had a favorite park to go to when I was a kid. Turns out the Z Man had a rough day at school with a bothersome cough so he decided to rest on the couch at the shop while Casey J and I went to the park. I grabbed my camera and off we went. I only had my 50mm lens which is not AF (auto focus) but figured I’d practice with it anyway. One of the boys buddies (he’s a Z too) and another classmate or two showed up at the park also. They were all playing together on the monkey bars  so I just laid down in the middle of them all and took some pictures. Much harder to take in foucs photos of actively moving kiddoes.

It was also weird to be at the park and only have to keep track of one of my guys. When we first went to parks I’d make them play together, follow each other etc… and I’d follow them around to keep track of them. Then I got to the point where I’d sit in a central area to see them both. Now I stay in the same area and call out if I haven’t seen them in a certain period of time. When I have my camera I’ll just hang around where they play, take a few photos then let them run off for a bit. I’ve gotten some of my best photos of the boys at the park. Here’s a few from the other day.

It’s a bird, nope is BatMan

Casey J more so than the Z Man goes through stages of pretending to be someone else. Mostly action figures and super heros with the occasional pet animal. Lately he’s been either “Flappy” the bird or the Batman. I had to con his Batman pajamas off him yesterday (after he wore the top part all day long with his blue jeans) so that I could wash them. Plus he wears his cape ALL DAY LONG. He fights Mr. Freeze, the “Yoker” and other various villians. I love watching them play using their imagination as long as they aren’t using the Bat-a-rang on each other. I’ll let him pretend to be whatever he wants as long as he wants as long as it’s  not too wacky. Yes, even if he asks to wear his cape to the grocery store, I’ll let him. Unless he’s 25 years old. And if he’s still living at home and riding in the grocery cart at 25 yrs of age we’ll have other issues.

You have fever

I think God has a pamplet on parenting. In particular one He chose not to print up for parents or even share with us. In that pamplet contains such things as – when your child gets sick it’s bound to happen on a weekend because that’s when your doctor is closed. Or if you child has a stomach bug you will find out in the middle of the the grocery store while browsing the cereal isle, then have to flee before everyone sees it was your child who yaked on the floor. Or the day before you leave on a pre-planned, non-cancelable vacation both of your children will get really ill. Along with all the other things you don’t hear about in parentening classes because if they told you this folks may actually reconsider having offspring.

Kids get fevers, it actually shows their fighting some infection. I understand all that. Except when CaseyJ gets a fever, particularly one above 100 degrees I worry. I want to know why he has that fever or what’s causing it. Main reason I become more concerned when he spikes a fever waiting_for_isotopesover his brother is because we went through the whole “my legs hurts so much I scream and can’t walk” thing bouncing from doctor to hospital to x-rays to bone scan to MRI.  The little tough guy also is slow to say he doesn’t feel good. It took him complaining of being cold and just laying around (not being himself) for us to find out he had a fever and a sore throat. All I could think was I remembered the sign on the school board saying two cases of strep throat were reported last week. Yipee. With all our options for seeing a doctor closed on a weekend I decided to make the 15 mile drive to the ER in Luling. Yes, the same one he was in a year ago for a bad case of strep (high fever and all over body rash) a day before we left for New Mexico and the same one we waited in four years ago for more x-rays of his hips. So these memories always seem to be fresh in my mind anytime he becomes ill. Although we got in and out fairly quickly I still have issues with hospitals.

I’ll tell you this though, the little dude is one tough hombre. The did the strep test (stick the q-tip like thingy so far in your throat you gag) and he made a face then announced “that didn’t hurt at all” and went back to reading his book. Note this is the same thing that sets his big brother Z off into a seriously dramatic crying fit. Then the flu test (a skinny q-tip like thingy shoved up his nose into his brain) he did not like that and pulled it out. This upset him and he cried a little but as I hugged him he wiped his tears from his eyes and in a half-tough half-wounded voice said “i didn’t like that but it didn’t hurt either”. Both tests were negative but with a really red throat and a fever he got the pink antibiotics anyway. A few doses of Tylenol later he was full of energy, until about 4:30pm or so. I noticed the other room was awfully quiet and when I walked in he was half asleep with the Wii remote in his hand, covered up on the couch just about passed out.  He took about a two hour nap and then spent some time watching a little tv before their bedtime.

I was able to prop my camera up onto the tripod to take a few pictures of him resting. He’s always in motion so these pictures are rare. Plus he’s so darn sweet looking when he’s asleep…. He’ll be fine in a day or so I’m sure, they have Monday off so he’ll have extra time to rest up. Let’s hope no one else gets the “germ”.
